Is Vienna boring? Austria invites a whole Scottish village to find out

Vienna wants to prove it’s not boring, so it has invited 100 people from a Scottish village to see the city’s main attractions.

The village of Dull in Perthshire, Scotland, will be visiting Austria next year as part of a playful cultural campaign.

Vienna’s tourist board even traveled to Dull to deliver wax-sealed invitations and gift bags to around 100 residents. They’ve asked the villagers to spend a weekend in the Austrian capital next January, which is often thought of as the dullest time of the year.

“While much of the world focuses on Dry January and gym routines, Vienna starts the year with celebrations, including over 400 balls, one of the world’s largest ice rinks, and UNESCO-recognized food traditions,” the tourist board said.

“And who better to judge whether Vienna is really boring than the people from Dull?”

A special visit to Austria

Dull has become famous worldwide, especially because of its connection to Boring, Oregon, in the US.

The Vienna Tourist Board says that while Dull is beautiful with its green countryside, it doesn’t have theatres, galleries, concert halls, or cultural venues.

Visitors from Dull will stay at the luxury Hotel Imperial, one of Vienna’s most famous hotels, which has hosted Queen Elizabeth II and The Rolling Stones.

Each guest will get a personalised schedule based on their interests. Activities include tours of the Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches Museums, dance classes, ice skating at Vienna Ice Dream, a visit to Schönbrunn Palace, and more. Some guests might even meet the UK Ambassador to Austria, Lindsay Skoll.

Bringing Dull to Vienna

“We’re proud of our museums, concerts, balls, and winter magic, but we also love a good sense of humor,” said Norbert Kettner, CEO of the Vienna Tourist Board.

“January is often called the dullest month, which is exactly why we wanted to bring Dull to Vienna.”

Kettner added that the campaign is a “perfect way” to show how lively Vienna can be in winter.

“With this initiative, we hope the villagers will join us and help decide if Vienna is really dull—even in January,” he said.
